In common with many other large estates at the time, all the laundry for the
main house was dealt with in a completely separate building.
The old Laundry building at Rosehaugh has now been redeveloped and renamed
"Red Kite House". It is another of Flockhart's outstanding designs and
is built in the English Vernacular Revival style. The walls are harled
and pebble dashed and the roof is red tiles.
The house is surrounded by a large grassy area which would have been used as
drying and bleaching greens in days gone by.
The high weather vane on top of the chimney stack would have been important to
to determine which of the drying greens to use depending on the wind direction.
The laundry work was done downstairs, and living accommodation was
provided above. The walls downstairs were covered with white tiles, these
have been retained in the kitchen of Osprey apartment - the tiled alcove
shown here once held the boiler. The laundry at the turn of the 20th century
was done by hand in large white Belfast sinks.
The laundry building fell into disuse when the main house was no longer
inhabited and has been left empty for many years. Although it never
deteriorated to the same extent as the Boat House and Otter Lodge, we
are very pleased to have finally restored it, and given it a new lease of
life as high quality holiday
accommodation.
